Aravind Study Shows Reusable Surgical Instruments Allow for Safe and Sustainable Ophthalmic Care

The October issue of JCRS highlights sustainability in ophthalmology with the lead article discussing multiuse surgical materials for cataract surgery. The study is conducted out of Aravind Eye Care System and reports no bacterial or fungal growth from extensive microbiological cultures taken from surgical instruments reused for multiple patients. The authors point to this evidence to suggest that the instrument and surgical supply processing practices at Aravind enables safe and sustainable ophthalmic care. Read about the full study and the associated editorial by Dr. William Dupps below.
