Potential Cost Savings Associated with a Multiuse Preoperative and Preinjection Eyedrop Protocol

Using multidose mydriatic eyedrop bottles across multiple patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery resulted in a nominal cost savings of $238,724.59 (97.41%) over 5 years compared with the current protocol of disposing of a multiuse bottle after use on a single patient. Over a 5-year period, multiuse povidone-iodine for intravitreal injections resulted in a nominal cost savings of $41,801.00 (99.64%) compared with the current protocol of disposing of each bottle after use in a single patient.
