Climate Crisis and Public Health

This 2022 lecture is a timely, current, and evidence-based overview of how weather extremes and the climate crisis are impacting public health.

Jonathan Patz, MD, is a leading authority on the health impacts of climate change and was lead author for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that received shared Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore in 2007. His 40-minute lecture starts at the 3:00 mark of the video. Of interest to ophthalmologists, Jon is the son of Arnall Patz MD, former chair of the Wilmer Eye Institute, ASCRS Hall of Fame inductee, and the clinician who first elucidated the cause of retinopathy of prematurity.

Professor Patz wrote this message to ophthalmologists joining EyeSustain:

"I would like to congratulate my colleagues in ophthalmology on the launch of EyeSustain. Recognizing the major impacts of climate change on public health, physicians can play an important role in advocating for solutions. EyeSustain will serve as a powerful resource for ways to reduce our impact on the environment through sustainable eye care and leadership by example.”
